The SMU Dedman School of Law is seeking a full-time Director of its advocacy curriculum and programs to begin Spring of 2025. The position is a non-tenured faculty position at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Clinical Professor, depending on the successful candidate's experience and qualifications. The appointment is for one year, and reappointment for subsequent years is possible upon satisfactory performance. Hiring is contingent upon the satisfactory completion of a background check. Primary responsibilities include directing Dedman Law's Board of Advocates program and teaching advocacy-related courses each semester.
The Board of Advocates ("BOA") is a student-run organization under the leadership and oversight of the Director of Legal Advocacy Programs. The BOA operates year-round with participation in mock trial, moot court, transactional, and ADR competitions, both nationally and internationally. BOA students also organize and participate in an annual service project. Participating students earn academic credit for completed competitions and/or service on the BOA Student Executive Board.

Director of Legal Advocacy Responsibilities
- Develop a vision to elevate advocacy instruction and programming at Dedman Law.
- Develop and teach a one-week, one-credit-hour required course during the January and August terms on Interviewing, Counseling, and Negotiations.
- Teach Negotiations and possibly one other advocacy course annually.
- Refine and establish policies and procedures that govern the BOA, including tryout procedures, selection and participation in competitions, and the role of adjunct coaches.
- Manage expenditures and expectations of students and coaches to align with the BOA's budget.
- Supervise BOA administrative support staff.
- Contribute to the law school, legal profession, and the community through leadership, collaboration, and service.
Qualifications:
- J.D. degree.
- At least 5 years practice experience with a focus on oral advocacy, negotiations, client counseling, and interviewing.
- Teaching experience or a passion for student development and training.
- A demonstrated commitment to public service and a desire to engage in the intellectual life of the University.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Strong leadership skills to synthesize priorities and organize plans of both students and adjunct coaches.
- Strong collaborative skills or experience in working with other professionals.
- Strong organizational skills.
